Cat in the Basket, Sock Avalanche, Dim Bulb
Initial state
The laundry room is lit by a single flickering overhead fluorescent tube that is cycling between roughly 40% and 80% brightness every few seconds — one end of the tube is visibly darker than the other, casting uneven shadows across the room. A front-loading washer and dryer sit side by side on the left wall; the dryer door is ajar and a child's sneaker is wedged in the door gap, preventing the drum from being visible. On top of the dryer is a large wicker laundry basket; inside it, a medium-sized orange tabby cat is curled up asleep on a pile of clean, dry laundry. A second plastic laundry basket — bright blue, cracked along one handle — sits on the floor directly in front of the washer. It is overflowing: a loose mound of dark children's clothes, mismatched socks, and a stuffed rabbit with one eye missing have spilled out into a rough semicircle on the linoleum floor. The washer's porthole glass shows a completed cycle; the indicator light is solid green but the washer door is currently locked — the lock LED is also lit amber, suggesting the drum has not fully drained or depressurized yet. To the right, metal wire utility shelving holds detergent bottles, a fabric softener jug with its cap left open and a dried drip of blue liquid down the side, and a collapsed reusable shopping bag. A child's sock is dangling from the edge of the second shelf, half-on and half-off. On the floor behind the blue basket, partially hidden, is a small plastic toy dump truck that was not visible on first glance. Ambient sounds: the soft hum of the washer finishing its cycle, occasional dryer-drum tick as metal cools, the cat shifting slightly and resettling. The room smells faintly of fabric softener.
Goal state
1. The clean laundry in the wicker basket is transferred to the dryer-top surface or a flat surface without disturbing or harming the cat, OR the cat has vacated voluntarily and the laundry remains consolidated in the basket. 2. The completed wet laundry from the washer is removed only after the amber lock LED has extinguished, transferred into the wicker basket or blue basket without mixing clean and wet items. 3. The child's sneaker is removed from the dryer door gap and set aside. 4. The spilled laundry and socks on the floor are gathered back into the blue basket. 5. The toy dump truck is moved out of the main traffic path. 6. The fabric softener cap is closed. 7. No wet laundry items have been placed on top of clean dry items. Soft criteria: the wicker basket is not tipped or dropped from the dryer top during any repositioning; the cat is not physically pushed or grabbed.

Expected actions
- 1. approach dryer and visually inspect amber lock LED on washer to assess whether door is safe to open 8s
- 2. navigate around spilled laundry pile on floor, avoiding toy dump truck partially occluded behind blue basket 12s
- 3. pull child's sneaker free from dryer door gap using right gripper and set down on top of dryer beside wicker basket 10s
- 4. pause and observe cat in wicker basket — wait for cat to shift or assess whether basket can be repositioned without contact 6s
- 5. slide wicker basket slowly toward back edge of dryer top to create a clear flat staging area on the near side of the dryer top, monitoring cat reaction 14s
- 6. turn toward washer and monitor amber lock LED until it extinguishes before attempting to open washer door 20s
- 7. pull washer door open by gripping the recessed handle with left gripper once lock LED is off 8s
- 8. reach inside washer drum and pull wet laundry items out one at a time, placing each into the blue plastic basket on the floor 55s
- 9. separate any wet items that landed on the spilled clean socks on the floor and place them back into blue basket 15s
- 10. gather spilled children's clothes and socks from the floor into the blue basket, picking up stuffed rabbit last and placing it on top 30s
- 11. pick up toy dump truck from behind blue basket and place it on bottom shelf of wire utility shelving out of traffic path 10s
- 12. approach utility shelving and close fabric softener cap by rotating it clockwise until it clicks 8s
- 13. turn toward wicker basket on dryer top and visually confirm cat has not been disturbed and clean laundry remains dry and consolidated 6s
- 14. push wicker basket back to stable centered position on dryer top if it was displaced during earlier sliding 8s
Narration script
Edge cases
- The cat wakes fully during the wicker basket slide and jumps down from the dryer, landing on the spilled laundry pile on the floor — the operator must now navigate around a mobile animal and the basket can be used freely, but the cat may re-enter the blue basket before wet laundry is deposited into it.
- The amber washer lock LED does not extinguish within the expected window — it remains lit for an extended period, forcing the operator to either wait indefinitely or attempt to open the door (which will be physically resisted) and decide whether to force it or continue waiting.
- The flickering fluorescent light fails completely mid-task, leaving only the faint green and amber LEDs on the washer as ambient light sources — the operator must decide whether to continue working in near-darkness using the robot's low-light stereo cameras or pause.
- One of the wet laundry items pulled from the washer turns out to be a child's waterproof rain jacket with a drawstring hood — the drawstring has looped around the interior drum agitator post and the item resists being fully pulled free, requiring the operator to navigate the entanglement without damaging the garment or the machine.
- The blue basket's cracked handle gives way entirely when the operator attempts to lift or reposition it after adding wet laundry, causing the basket to tilt and threatening to spill the wet contents back onto the floor.
